U.S. CIVIL WAR

A quite scarce Civil War Sutler "check" or soldier's order/receipt for purchases in the field. Sutlers were, of course, the day-to-day traveling store that provided much needed goods to men at the front—tea, coffee, pencils, paper, shirts, hats, pots and pans. The soldier could purchase on credit from his regiment's sutler and the sutler would in turn provide the company paymaster with the information to be deducted from the soldier's pay. Sutler tokens can fetch $250 to $1,000 or more these days and paper "chits" or receipts are as scarce. This one is from J.B. Goodwin, Sutler to the 59th Ohio Volunteers. Unused and in perfect condition, it's certainly a rarity to find.
